Benja Harney, the master of paper engineering

I’m a HUGE fan of paper art, paper engineering, paper sculptures, whatever you want to call it. I’ve always loved paper. I love its fragility, its strength and its different textures but most of all I love that you can do anything with it. It’s so useful and so mundane that when someone as incredible as Benja Harney decides to use it as his main medium of choice it really makes you rethink the beauty and potential of just about anything.

But to make something gorgeous out of something so plain and one dimensional is a skills set in itself. One, I myself sadly do not possess, which probably adds to my love for the art form.

So enough of my fan girl ramblings. In honour of Benja Harney speaking at Semi-Permanence this year in Sydney (which I’m crossing my fingers my workplace sends me to) here is some awesome paper artwork by Benja Harney.

Harney’s works range from adverts, packaging, bespoke creations, and pop-up books. His work is so loved right now that big time clients such as Hermes, Kylie Minogue, Desktop Magazine and Telstra can’t get enough of him… Talk about living the dream!

Progetty Arcade Portfolio – An awesome HTML5 Website

Oh how I missed blogging whilst I was sick with a horrid bout of Bronchitis. But as they say when something doesn’t go quite right it’s always an opportunity in disguise.

So whilst I was sick in bed, watching movies, and being all ‘woe-is-me’ I had the chance to find this awesome portfolio website. Portfolio surfing is one of my many past times but I fell in LOVE when I stumbled upon this one.

Progetty Arcade Portfolio

Progetty Arcade Portfolio is an interactive website made entirely out of HTML5 meaning absolutely no flash. The website itself is based on such a great concept. Bascially if you want to see their work – you’re going to have to work for it. All in the name of fun of course.

Progetty Studio Arcade Game

The visuals are based on the retro style of the old pixel arcade games, think Space Invaders. The aim is to shoot these little rainbow hexagons for points using your arrow and space keys and every time a star is shot you unlock some of their portfolio work. But just quietly, I love that the little hexagons make a up the whole hexagon colour spectrum! That intense rainbow of colour makes the whole page just pop.

The user, of course has the option to opt out of the game and go straight into the portfolio work but that nostalgic “Insert Coin” link is bound to get you to play!

Progetty Studio Arcade Portfolio

Overall the portfolio is fun, playful and something different from the other straight up portfolios out there. And most of all it goes to show the power of HTML5!

For the love of Comic Sans

Designers have been brought up to hate Comic Sans. And since I was brought up right, I hate Comic Sans just as much as any other designer. Still, that didn’t stop me from having a hearty chuckle at this stop motion video filmed and edited by Joe Hollier. It’s an awesome video that fights for Comic Sans rights.

Despite how much I love this video, and how funny it is, how the visuals are quirky cool and the stop animation is done so well…

I still hate Comic Sans.

No no, I didn’t forget to make a New Year’s resolution this year. Anyway, it would be pretty useless of me to try to start one now especially since we’re already past mid year.

Basically I came across this booklet below and thought this piece would be a fitting first post for my blog.

It’s simply funny because it’s true.

Elliot Scott and Christopher Doyle produced this piece of work to combat design laziness and complacency. The booklet was brought about by their angst at seeing the same design trends over and over again.

Unfortunately they’ve sold out of their 1000 copies but you can still check out some pages of the booklet at their website, This year I will try not to.
